It depends on which metal detector you are using these with, but the transmitter usually goes on the shaft or arm-cuff of the detector and secured using the black rubber band. Then you would plug the cable with the 1/4" headphone plug into the headphone jack of your detector and the other end into the transmitter (unless you're using it with an AT Pro - in which case you'd need an additional cable)
The receiver is normally worn on your belt or pouch with your detector's headphones plugged into it accordingly.
