Depth is determined by the environment in which you are detecting and the equipment you are using. Environmental factors such as actual depth and size of the target, whether the soil is loose or compact, dry or wet and the type of metal that the target consists of. The equipment used such as coil size, will impact depth. A safe assumption is that depth will be relative to the width of the coil being used in inches. The technology being used is also a factor, Pulse Induction will penetrate deeper than VLF machines.
